New Year

It’s five days to go before 2017! That time of the year where fireworks become synonymous with the new year. A time when people start to think about their resolutions list, make promises to do an act of self-improvement or something slightly nice, maybe open doors for people beginning New Year’s Day. Similarly, it’s also a time where some people have relied on astrological predictions to help them find the answer to life’s most serious problems and questions related to Marriage, Love, Career, Finance, Education, Health and other aspects of life. After all, a new year always brings along with it anticipation and excitement. Coming year 2017 is no different!.

Just My Luck

Ok let’s face it, some of us really believe in luck. Why do you think lottery, gambling, game shows have been really good businesses? Because whether we admit it or not, some of us desire the quickest way to get what we want. And some people really are just fortunate enough to get them. You spend less than a dollar to buy a lottery ticket and then if lucky, you wake up the next day with millions of it! Wow! Who wouldn’t want that?

Our beliefs about luck can be divided into two camps: stable or fleeting. People who see luck as fleeting, would be more likely to believe that luck follows an unpredictable pattern of ups and downs. On the other hand, if you feel like luck is stable, and within your sphere of influence, your are much more likely to persevere towards your goals. So, how do you see luck? Do you feel lucky this new year?

New Year’s Resolutions

New Year’s resolutions are all about hopefulness. And it’s always been that way. It“a triumph of hope over experience”. Every year, we make a list of promises to ourselves. Some are practical, while others are a bit of a stretch. Whether it’s about loosing weight this new year, quitting smoking or being a better husband or dad, it’s all about doing things you feel like you fell short of last year. They can be personal, career or business related and even financial. End of the day, you can categorize your resolutions list as goals you want to achieve when the new year kicks in. But the real question is, are you going to be able to keep this up for three hundred and sixty five days (365)? Being consistent over the long run can be more challenging for some. 😉

Goal Setting

So how do you plan ahead? How do you synchronize your goals to ensure you have a way better new year? Let’s look deeper…

Goals Process

Before you make your list, it’s important to implement the S.M.A.R.T. principle which can be used to provide a more comprehensive definition of goal setting:

  • S – specific, significant, stretching
  • M – measurable, meaningful, motivational
  • A – agreed upon, attainable, achievable, acceptable, action-oriented
  • R – realistic, relevant, reasonable, rewarding, results-oriented
  • T – time-based, time-bound, timely, tangible, trackable

Next, set your milestones. While goals define where you’re going, milestones let you know if you’re actually getting there. This new year, as you set your goals (physical, financial, career/business, etc.) think about significant actions and achievements necessary to make progress toward these goals.

Then start creating action plans of how to achieve your goals and milestones. These will help you to focus your ideas and to decide what steps you need to take to achieve the latter. They differ from To-Do Lists in that they focus on the achievement of a single goal. The upcoming new year will give you ample time to think of activities to do. After all, we’re talking about 365 days!

Lastly, do the work. You’re not expecting this to be a walk in the park aren’t you? That means hard and smart work is required. Don’t just make your goals just a piece of paper with no value. Make this list something fit for a museum. Something you can be proud of. Who knows, these goals you set for yourself, business or career may impact change not only for your but for others too!

Reminder: Don’t forget to gauge your performance towards this list. You can do this quarterly or bi-annual. Ask yourself the question, “am I on track?” If you see that you’re not, then it is an opportunity to look at the goals you’ve set for yourself… maybe they’re far fetched or you are just not doing the right things. A performance report helps big time.
